A Very D.C. Weekend

Does taking pictures of geometrical ceilings of the D.C. Metro station ever get old? I think not.

Now that spring has sprung (at least some of the time), it's been great fun getting out and doing various D.C.-y things. We kicked off our personal "Spring in the Nation's Capital" calendar of events last Friday at the Hirshhorn After Hours party, a semi-regular Friday night gathering during the warmer months. The premise is pretty simple: Come, drink, view some contemporary art, listen to some live performances (I really enjoyed the hyped-up antics of dancing duo Hooliganship, best viewed through 3-D glasses. Fun!). Frankly, I'd invite anyone who talks down D.C.'s fashion scene to hit up this event -- it was like a non-stop parade of cute and inventive outifts. We were impressed! I also thought that maybe I should have sported something more daring than my scoop-neck, super-belted LBD (which is really cute, but slightly restrained, though it didn't really matter because I had to keep my coat on the whole time anyway). Um, wait, this isn't my fashion blog? Sorry about that.

Anyway, the Hirshhorn, in all its rounded utilitarian goodness, is infinitely photographable. Also: Great gift shop!

is this art? no, it's actually my bootie. {um, but not my booty. very important distinction.}

so, for as long as i live in d.c., you're going to be seeing a lot of the metro. it's too fun!

Saturday dawned bright and partly cloudy, perfect for our first league soccer game. Now, I signed up for the team on the promise of post-game Bloody Marys and because they were desperately in need of females to meet the league requirements. Probably because, I later realized, all the other women had quit as it's actually a slightly serious league of people who do things like head the ball. And run a little too fast, for my liking. And, to top it all off, I never even got a Bloody Mary. Hrumpf.

The best part is that the field is down on the Mall, just between the Lincoln and Washington memorials. So you get a nice dose of nationalistic pride and get to amuse lots of sightseeing tourists with your lack of stamina and coordination.

Post-game, we took a long walk around the cherry blossoms (now in peak blossomy form!) and around the city. I tried to get Mike to do a cartwheel on the Mall, but he refused. He did pose in the mirror, however:

Also, just wanted to report that Peeve and Commander Robot are as ridiculous as ever. Here is Commander Robot's new favorite resting post:
those back legs kill me!

Peeve is more into chasing her tail in the bathtub and meowing as loud as possibly when there is not a warm lap readily available.

More from our Nation's Capital will be coming soon! We've still got like 90 more monuments to go. Hurrah!

hee. the soccer uniforms are very DIY (it's a "bring your own green t-shirt" kind of dealie... we went with a classic kelly hue, but there were all sorts of shades, from pale green-gray to forest. which is probably why we lost. lack of team fashion unity and all.)

the leggings are because i was cold. and the army jacket is because mike didn't think we should wear the same warm-up jackets, lest the other kids make fun of us. i'm pretty sure they made fun of us anyway for our serious lack of soccer skillz.

About me

Well, hello there. You've reached the photoblog of Betsy, who has not actually lived in China for some time. The site name is not a total lie: She did live in Beijing from 2003-2005, but then moved to Singapore from 2006-2007. In late 2007, she returned home to the U.S., where she plans to continue posting pictures of her travels around the States and frequent trips back to Asia, and asks you all to just kindly accept the incorrect name of this site for just a little while longer. If you're crazy for Asia pictures, there are lots and lots of archives below that will surely satisfy that itch.

I also keep a fashion blog, if that's the kind of thing that interests you.

Want more? Go ahead and send me a note. I love mail!

About my cameras

Most of the pictures on this site have been taken with various versions of the Canon Elph (Ixus in Asia), most recently the Canon Elph SD400, which I purchased in late 2005. In early 2007, I also began using a Nikon D80 SLR camera with an 18-200mm kit lens and, more recently, a 52mm lens.
