the old guy himself

I am quite sore due to a revisit to ye olde local skiing spot next to the brick factory. Which means I am avoiding today's triathlon-preparing workout in favor of internet fun. And so, as a thank you for all your recent patience and in the spirit of annual Christmas Card pictures, I present a photo essay entitled Photos of People Posing in Front of Mao in Tiananmen Square. (Note: None of these people were posing for me.) Happy holidays.

the classic pose.

a personal favorite

note the small Chinese flag, perfect for waving while posing in front of the Chairman

more waving! more waving!

this man chose to pose looking thoughtfully into the distance.

by the way, Chinese people almost never smile in pictures.

very nattily dressed, don't you think?

not everyone liked having their picture taken. possibly because this kid wanted no proof he used to dress in zebra.

this little kid was most certainly wearing pants with a slit in the bottom.

non-smilers. and, in the back, the other classic pose: the peace sign.

trying hard to contain excitement.

me in about five minutes. i'm beat.

the photo madness of Fashion Week, and one of the only not-for-publication pictures I have taken all month. honestly.

Thanks to everyone who e-mailed me over the past month to make sure I really did make it back safe and sound. (If by everyone, I mean no one, which I do. Ahem.) Where has the month gone? To explain for my neglect, here is a quick summation of my recent activities that prove my constant busy-ness:

1. We started scuba classes two weeks ago, so we can finish up our certification at the Great Barrier Reef in January. (Yes, I will finally find out what's so great about the Barrier Reef.) Thoughts: Scuba is cool, but not at first.

2. I've been working! (See photo above, taken during Fashion Week.) Some recent articles and such are now available here, which is still under construction but somewhat readable for those who are interested. (And thanks to my brother Andy for the design help.)

3. I'm on day 9 of my couch-to-triathalon training program. Me! Running! The surprises never stop. So far, it's going swell.

4. I just got my hands on Season 1 of The O.C. and I am shamefully addicted. It's all I can do not to watch all 27 episodes in a round-the-clock O.C. marathon. Someone needs to take it away from me.

5. It's December! We're talking Christmas parties, ski trips, decorating, and tons of shopping. I do love the holidays!

Hi, I'm Betsy, and I'm in China. Whooo. I arrived on October 30, 2003 (and started this site shortly thereafter), to chronicle my adventures. Stick around, it should be fun.

Want more? Go ahead and e-mail me. Say hello!
